flash in living colour
medical dinner and dance 2005

i love dancing...

had lots of fun at the dnd! took plenty of photos; the m2s were really enthusiastic about the table themes...there were the movie stars (who won best dressed table), the hookers and pimps?!? in their crazy colourful wigs, the safari table..i suppose the m1s were dressed up too but since i only knew donovan and brenda and blanche, i didn't pay much attention to them. though i couldn't help but notice the bright yellow umbrellas and acjc raincoats. everyone just looked so colourful and amazing...

aishu, jess and i sat at the vip table. not much difference except that we got better cutlery/crockery. the food was average i guess, though the mango pudding quite good. it had bits of red fruit cocktail on it. innovative...

oh and i won 3rd prize in the lucky draw! ticket 26d...yeah baby...1 year membership at haach spa. gave it to mum. no time to use it after all...surprisingly there was a bit of dancing when the whole thing was over. mostly just standing around shaking but it was still fun...

sunday: haihan and i had our first proper lesson at xen. 3 hours of salsa. there weren't enough girls so i was perpetually on the floor. loved every moment. even the vertigo XD

11:29 PM

hosted a japanese medical student from the 17th to 19th of august. about 48 hours of madness. jianhong, jiayang, dehan, jinxi, lynn, huimin and i picked them up from changi airport at about 11 am on wednesday, and from then on we never seemed to stop moving. brought them to changi village to try hawker food (nasi lemak, wanton mee, hor fun, rojak, char kway teow...), then sentosa for a day of sports and underwater world. we wanted to have dinner at kar soh but the one at dempsy road had moved so we ate at some golden peony restaurant instead. not bad for 10 bucks per head. rushed home to wash up then drove down to zouk for mambo night. i don't think clubbing is quite my thing; it was like mass dance with extremely loud music. at least the tunes were nice though - they all seemed to have been ripped from gold 90 fm. a few other m2s like zhongyang and issac joined us there too. the jap students have so much energy - by the time i drove jinxi/yuko back and went home, it was already 5am. slept for 4 plus hours then yuka and i went to fetch lynn/chiharu and jinxi/yuko to miramir hotel for the dim sum buffet. dropped by orchard for some very very quick shopping, then they were off to the cdc and ttsh with their prof. we brought them to the suntec area for even more shopping! haha, really contributed to singapore's economy...well, the girls definitely had fun in topshop/mango/gg<5 etc... can't say the same for the boys though. dinner was at marche, which they liked very much as well. we walked around the esplanade area to see the merlion and the durian. took lots of photos and generally clowned around. was quite late by the time yuka and i got home. she packed her stuff, took a shower then we went to jinxi's house for one last ditch attempt at drunken revelry. jiayang brought wine and beer and vodka and we played really hard jap variations of the concentration game throughout the night. didn't sleep a wink. the parents refused to let me drive so mum came to send us to the airport at 6am on the 19th. a few last photos, and the whirlwind holiday was over. will miss them. till next year then...japan here i come!!!

tues - did national day signing for singapore association for the deaf. 'uniquely you' song and the pledge. very hot day. was bored stiff most of the time. transport home was a logistical nightmare; city hall mrt station was closed and people were only let through in batches because it was so crowded. walked to bugis in the end to be picked up by ernest's mum. dad fetched me from newton.

thurs - welcome lunch for cms m1s was...well, only 1 m1 turned up so...hope it isn't indicative of their batch's enthusiasm. went to munchie monkeys. mostly m2s and some m4s + daniel showed up.

fri - patho tut is very challenging. the mugging has started. painted purple wooden photo frames and moulded clay stars/moon to give to the jap immersion people when they come while waiting for css welcome mass in the evening. t\picked thomas up from tuition at charlie chan after that. had a late dinner and still have sailing camp tomorrow...tired...

saturday: nus rag and flag day. went down to cheer the medicine float + dancers on. thought the set-up looked great on the 4m lorry; the display looked just a touch empty on the 7m lorry. we didn't win any of the prizes but i heard we got a silver for the float, which puts us around the 4th or 5th position. but the most wonderful achievement was that we (ok, THEY...those hardworking, selfless people who laboured over the float day and night...) actually did it. granted, the biz-ed dinner and masquerade/circus themed sheares hall float were way out of our league, but...i'm really proud of what we had.

rushed off to the esplanade to watch the dim sum dollies matinee show with zhongyang. it wasn't quite a musical in the traditional sense - more of a political/social commentary. the show was only applicable to singaporeans, which is a pity because those 3 ladies (and the steaming lor mai guys!) are very talented. but it'd be near impossible to market dim sum dollies overseas since no one else would appreciate the satire.

hc wushu gathering at qi's house in the evening. jiean, randal, aileen, lmm, jy, by, qi and myself had dinner in her backyard. somehow ended up talking about whether IVF was legal for single women. right. anyway, we had a great time as usual, laughing about everything under the sun. aileen gave me a lift home and that was the end of a tiring but most fruitful day.

sunday: mass at christ the king, then brunch with the family at da pai dang. we wanted to try the peach garden at thompson plaza but it was fully booked. next time... went to daniel's house for a CMS meeting in the afternoon. only maureen, daniel, mark, chris and myself turned up but we still managed to get some goals/objectives/activities planned for the academic year ahead. first up - recruiting M1s! took the mrt to town to have dinner with the family. had indonesion food at sanur in centrepoint since claire wasn't around to veto the spicy food.

monday: 1.5 hours of introduction to immunology that felt more like a full-fledged lecture. the content was just...staggering. all those new concepts. met up with the jap immersion people at 11 to discuss how we're going to entertain the japanese exchange students when they arrive. seems to revolve mainly around the food, but i guess that's the most attractive aspect of singapore.

in the evening, the family went to uncle kaimeng's new house for a housewarming party. it's beautiful - a bungalow in the most modern style with wooden panels everywhere and steps that just seem to to float off the ground. one of those properties you see in the straits times but can never believe exist in real life. a methodist pastor blessed the house; i felt a bit uncomfortable throughout the blessing ceremony - i think catholics tend to be more reserved in the way we worship than most other denominations - but it was alright on the whole. had more spicy indonesian food which poor claire didn't appreciate at all, then ben & jerry's to wash it all down.

oh look, national day already...

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE

back to school. FOCUS.

boredom setting in already. hope the lectures get more interesting. the m2 timetable is very packed but still better than my hc one. maybe if i repeat it to myself often enough i'll actually begin to believe it.

rag and flag day tomorrow. hope the medicine float is ready by then.

the end!
of my last long break ever...

i guess all good things come to an end. has my childhood come to a close?
it's all right to grow up, as long as you never grow old.
'fox' t-shirts have interesting slogans now and then.

spent the eve of m2 watching charlie and the chocolate factory with jess, jialing and ky. it's a very disturbing show; johnny depp was a most uncomfortable willy wonka. but i suppose the little kids wouldn't have caught the subtleties so...anyway, the movie was visually stunning. lovely special effects. definitely one for the 'must watch' list, especially if you appreciate tim burton's work.

11:19 PM

float day!! congratulations to all the hard working people who made it all possible. can't believe it actually got done on time (no thanks to me XD). i felt quite proud watching the curious public gawk even though i wasn't involved in the construction.

the theme was supposed to be healthy living, so there were assorted fruits/veggies as well as junk food on the platform. the skeleton in the sleigh was really nice! it had a mosquito coil for brains and was supposed to emit smoke from its mouth, but due to imperfect craniotomy suturing it started steaming from the circumference of its head. haha, talk about δΈƒηͺη”ŸηƒŸ! the watermelon and soft drink were so shiny. and the carrot too; if the ones in ntuc were half as vibrant an orange...anyway, couldn't tell the brown oblong mass in a corner was supposed to be a potato but i was very impressed when the skin fell apart to reveal a can of potato chips. one slice of the watermelon also moved from which spilled red helium-filled balloons. wasn't too sure what that effect was supposed to achieve, but it was all good.

love the float dance(rs)! very cheerleading-routine based with lots of throwing and spinning people. the 'good/healthy' girls and boys wore green and reminded me strongly of buckle house back in rg. as usual, the bad children were much cooler in their red and black get-up. and all that silver glitter and black face paint...more shiny objects!!! then there were the mascots - denise the cabbage, mark the fish, a watermelon boy, and 2 fry boys i think. so cute. definitely helped to make the whole scene so much more vibrant. in the end, i think float is more about the people then the constructs.

we only covered 3 places today - kk hospital, toa payoh hdb hub and tampines mall. was worried that we'd have to pack up early when it suddenly poured at kk but the heavens were kind and the rain went away. i'm proud to say that I DID NOT GET LOST ONCE! hah! well, then again, i had researched the route with mum beforehand. didn't want to risk other people being traumatised by sitting in my car. took 'the vocal chords' acapella group around singapore. they were excellent! but the nus sound system didn't do them justice during the public performances. the solo buskers were not so affected though. didn't realise there were so many talented people in nus medicine, not the least of which were the hilarious emcees zhongkai and hamid... i learn new things everyday...

:)

oh yeah, got my first paycheck ever yesterday for transcribing the study. felt...nice. but.

"it takes a child to dream like this."
~ operation theatre: a good history

a really good production considering it was completely staged by busy medical students. amanda's voice is truly amazing. and mr black was hilarious! i love his ponytail and chee koh peh smile...haha...then there was ian mathews, who's always entertaining. so many people from my batch were involved as well - ruxin, victor, serena, denise, jean, mary...great show people! some of the jokes were really pointed; buying over medical school, strange people with distinctive initials...and then there were the not so clean one-liners by the wonderfully evil mr black. XD

there were certain parts in the play that struck a chord. certainly ling with her pink gloves and interest in learning the violin and erhu was reminiscent of...*innocent smile*. but mainly it got me thinking about how life just seems to fly by...

went to christ the king in ang mo kio instead of st mary's for mass this week becuase the parents didn't want to struggle through the feast day food and fun fair. the congregation at this church was definitely more vocal, but i missed the familiar surroundings of st mary's. brunch was dim sum with the family, then i went to city hall to meet jess, ky and aishu for lunch at nooch before ot.

after the play jess, ky, jayne and i took the mrt back to bishan. picked up some chips and drinks, then i drove us all to gilman heights. met up with 02s72...many of them anyway. as usual the boys did all the cooking and the girls did all the eating. and all was right in the world.
